Uniting Universes: A Review of ‘Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes & Huntsmen, Part One’ in 4K

3 Mins read

Warner Bros. The idea of a Justice League x RWBY cross-over movie was something I wasn’t sure about. Justice League and RWBY Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part One was a crossover that I would never have imagined. After seeing it, I really liked the concept and the movie.

As a JLA/RWBY enthusiast, I was unsure how these two worlds would blend. Warner Animation and Rooster Teeth did a great job.

The animation team at RoosterTeeth, Warner and original RT creator Kerry Shawcross has created an exciting film which I believe will please JLA and RWBY lovers alike. Meghan Fitzmartin, who wrote the Justice Society World War II animation movie and episodes of the DC Super Hero Girlsshow has written a great script that brings these two teams for the first in this movie.

In Part 1 of this crossover, the JLA of Batman, Superman Wonder Woman, Flash Green Lantern Vixen and Cyborg are in the world Remnant. That’s at least what the team is told.

Superman appears out of the blue as Yang and Ruby fight a group of Grimm monsters with superpowers. They are terrorizing this country. He soon discovers he’s not in Kansas any more. He quickly recovers his senses, joins Ruby Yang to defeat the Grimm. Ruby and Yang have a lot of questions after the battle. She realizes that Ozpin is the only person who can answer them.

The other DC Heroes also face similar challenges. Wonder Woman is discovered at Belladonna Estate by the guards while Blake and his mother discuss disturbances to their communication systems. Bruce Wayne is found by Wiess lurking in her home during the gala that her father throws, as he tries to find out what’s going on. Cyborg Lantern Flash Vixen and Glynda are doing the exact same thing.

The team has also discovered that the powers of their members have changed. The Remenent is a world where technology and powers are made possible by something called Dust and Semblance. In addition, the Justice League is now composed of teenagers in new outfits (which reminds me of Justice League Unlimited Season 1 Episode “Kids Stuff”).

Both teams have finally met up.

After many misunderstandings and disagreements over leadership and mistrust between the Justice League and RWBY, they realize they need to work together in order to find out what is going on and fix it.

The action in this film, which I haven’t described spoiler-free here, is incredible.

Over half the total 80-minute runtime is action. It was exactly what I would expect from a JL/RWBY movie. It’s a good mix between RWBY style and traditional Warner Justice League films and Batman. The style of the animation is jarring, but it’s not too bad once you get used. I did.

It helped me immensely to have a solid but passing knowledge of the RWBY Universe. I don’t believe it is necessary. They do an excellent job of giving viewers who know little about the universe a cliff-notes version. The writer seems to be betting on the fact that people are more familiar with the Justice League universe and the backstories of its members than the RWBYverse.

This film is really good. It was a great film from beginning to end. It made me realise that I had never completed RWBY some years back. Now I’m rewatching RWBY from the very beginning. This is a great example of a crossover. This is a success if it encourages the viewers to learn more about characters that they don’t know. After watching the film, I also read up about Jessica Cruz’s role as Green Lantern.

The extras are two animated featurettes and two bonus episodes (“Kid Stuff”, previously discussed from Justice League UnlimitedS1E5, and “Plastic Man Saves the World”, from Justice League ActionS01E17).

I think this is a win-win for RoosterTeeth and Warner Animation. The animation is fantastic and I love the story. They did a great job with the different characters. The journeys of the characters, their teaming ups and the overall story arcs made for a really enjoyable watch.

This is a must-have for any fan of RWBY or Justice League.

The title of this “Part One” leads one to think that a “Part Two”, soon, is coming. It is my hope that the RWBY character will appear in the Justice League universe with a new design of the characters and their outfits.

It is just fair.
