It is my second graphic novel about David Bowie. Mike Allred wrote and drew the first, and it was fantastic. It’s a little different, as this is the first in a new series of David Bowie comics from Reinhard Kliist. Then I’m all in if they’re as good as the one that was released.
The novel takes place in 1972.
Ziggy Stardust is the Bowie character that we get to watch in its beginning. We get to watch Bowie fail in London’s music scene before Ziggy was born. Bowie’s failure in the London music scene is shown.
Ziggy Stardust also makes an appearance.
This story is about Ziggy’s musical journeys. Bowie expands as Ziggy grows.
Bowie begins to live a life of extremes and madness. Ziggy begins to experience the same. The two personalities are very interesting, in terms of their creative and psychological correlation.
This book’s artwork does most of the work. The artwork feels as if it was created in a long-gone era. The artwork also lets us experience Bowie/Stardust’s mind at any given moment. Kleist does not even attempt to imitate Allred’s writing style in the book mentioned earlier. He just follows his own crazy path here.
This character’s rise is also a part of the story. Also, we get to watch his fall. All of it is very well researched. The film is emotional, as it gives us a feel for what Bowie/Stardust must have felt like during this time. Both are affected by the downward spiral.
Reinhard Kleist did a fantastic job in creating this book. The future releases are exciting. He gets to the heart of what Bowie is and how he was. Also, he gives us an accurate picture of a great artist at his most creative peak.
