Embarking on a Cinematic Voyage: A Review of the ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ Motion Picture Collection in 4K

2 Mins read

Star Trek The Next Generation 4 Movie Collection in 4K Ultra HD for the very first time.

This collection contains all four TNG films — Star Trek GenerationsStar Trek First ContactStar Trek Insurrection, and Star Trek Nemesis(2002) on 4K UltraHD, along with all the legacy bonus material and digital copies for each movie. The titles are also sold separately.

The classic adventure films are presented in a new, crisper clarity. Visual effects and costumes are in vivid, sharp detail that has not been seen on the big screen since their premieres.

Most dramatic improvement in visual quality is the contrast and resolution of interior low-light scenes.

Star Trek Nemesis was hard to follow on previous releases because scenes were muddled by shadows. This 4K UHD enhancement adds contrast and definition to the scenes, making Nemesis more dynamic.

The 4K UHD experience is unbeatable, but the quality of the films themselves remains mixed more than 20 years after the original release.

Generations transfers the Star Trek film franchise torch to The Next Generation cast after their seventh season. The characters were more developed individually as well as collectively than the TOS counterparts. The first film adventure features Captain Picard, the android Data, as its central characters. However, Riker, Worf LaForge Troi and Dr. Crush are still present in the supporting roles.

First Contactis generally regarded as the highest point of TNG. It showcases all the good things about the series: humor, action and camaraderie. This installment, directed by Jonathan Frakes of the series, was well-received by both critics and audience members upon its release. It took $146 million in box office revenue. In a thrilling, fast-paced adventure, Picard and his crew go back in time in order to foil the Borg’s plot in an attempt to prevent the Federation from being founded.

After First Contact the franchise starts to falter with Insurrection. In this film, Data discovers a plot to destroy a planet, which forces the crew to face a Starfleet conspiracy. The stakes and intensity are not as high in this entertaining episode, which plays out more like an expensive television show. Insurrection also fails to fully utilize the ensemble with certain characters only serving as plot support. The problem will be even worse in the next film of this franchise.

The marriage of Will Riker to Deanna Troi brings back the entire crew in Nemesis. A new enemy with a familiar look and familiar faces is featured, as well as a cast that has been in unusual situations. The film was poorly received when it first came out. It has some exciting action scenes and beautiful visuals, but also suffers from badly-conceived characters and emotional moments that don’t fully connect.

The extras on the Blu-ray discs and 4K discs include multiple commentaries, plus featurettes, deleted scene, storyboards and trailers. There are also galleries and interviews.

This Star Trek The Next Generation 4 movie set is a great option for Star Trek collectors and fans alike. Even the most gleaming restoration will not be enough to change the inconsistent quality of each film. The individual releases are better for casual viewers who want to see the films again or watch them for the very first time.
